LOS ANGELES - March 14, 2005 – Robert Downey Jr., Ray Wise, Frank Langella, Jeff Daniels
and Tate Donovan have joined previously announced stars David Strathairn, Patricia Clarkson
and George Clooney in “Good Night. And Good Luck.” being directed by Clooney for Section
Eight, 2929 Entertainment and Participant Productions. The film, which commenced
principal photography this week, tells the story of renowned broadcaster Edward R. Murrow’s
legendary on-air confrontations with Senator Joseph McCarthy that helped bring down the
infamous politician.
Co-written by Clooney with producer Grant Heslov, the film is financed by Todd Wagner and
Mark Cuban’s 2929 Entertainment and Jeff Skoll’s Participant Productions. Executive
producers are Steven Soderbergh, Ben Cosgrove, Jennifer Fox, Todd Wagner, Mark Cuban, Marc
Butan and Jeff Skoll. In addition, overseas co-production partners are Metropolitan Films
of France, the UK’s Redbus, and Tohokushinsha of Japan.
Warner Independent will distribute the film in north America, and 2929 International, the
foreign distribution arm of 2929 Entertainment, is handling international sales.
Based on actual events, the film’s story follows broadcasting legend Murrow, played by
Strathairn, and his producer, Fred Friendly, played by Clooney, during the historic
confrontations of the House Un-American Activities Committee anti-Communist hearings.
Murrow, then host of the CBS series “See It Now”, exposed the deceit, bullying and
manipulation of the then-powerful McCarthy in one of history’s most courageous moments of
journalism.
George Clooney has had a notable career both in front of and behind the camera. He
directed “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” in which he also starred, and was recently seen
in “Ocean’s Twelve” for which he was also an executive producer. He is partnered with
Steven Soderbergh in Section Eight.
David Strathairn has been acclaimed by critics for his many memorable film and stage
performances, including those in such films as “The Firm”, “Passion Fish”, “L.A.
Confidential” and “Blue Car”. He recently worked on three new productions, “Woodcutter”,
“The Ballad of Bettie Page” and “Heavens Fall”.
Robert Downey Jr. has starred in numerous films since his acclaimed role as Charlie
Chaplin in “Chaplin” and has recently completed three new films, “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”,
“The Shaggy Dog” and “A Scanner Darkly”. He was also recently signed to star in “Fur” with
Nicole Kidman.
One of Hollywood’s most highly regarded actresses, Patricia Clarkson has earned critical
accolades for her work in such films as “The Station Agent”, “Dogville”, “Pieces of April”,
“Far From Heaven” and the Section Eight production of “Welcome to Collinwood”. She
recently completed work on “Conquistadora”, “The Dying Gaul” and “The Woods”.
Ray Wise is well known for his role in the acclaimed television series, “Twin Peaks” and
the movie “Twin Peaks: Firewalk With Me”. He has appeared in many film roles, among them
most recently in “Jeepers Creepers II”.
Two-time Tony Award winner, Frank Langella, recently completed his role in “House of D”
and can be seen in HBO’s “Unscripted”. His many films include “The 12 Chairs”, “Diary of
a Mad Housewife”, “Dracula”, “Lolita”, “Dave” and “The Ninth Gate”.
Jeff Daniels’ many film credits include”The Hours”, “Gods and Generals”, “Imaginary
Heroes” and more recently “Because of Winn-Dixie” and “The Squid and the Whale”.
Tate Donovan starred in the hit series “The O.C.” and stars in the new film release, “The
Pacifier”.
